Spanish Prime Minister is set to meet with President Trump at the White House in September.
Spain’s prime minister Mariano Rajoy will arrive in NewYork on September 22nd toward the end of the US General Assembly which begins on September 19th.
Rajoy will then travel to Washington DC to meet with President Donald Trump on either September 25th or September 26th. This will be the first full meeting between Rajoy and Trump, who have only met each other briefly at the Nato Summit in May. They however. have had two telephone conversations.
The visit to the United States is apparently aimed toward showing an image of normality, say diplomatic sources. Rajoy’s visit will come less than two weeks before referendum due to be held in Catalunia on independence day for the region on October 1st. The referendum has been ruled illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court. Rajoy has said that he is determined to prevent the referendum from going ahead.
The White House as announced Duke Buchan 111 as the new US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra. Buchan who is 54 studied economics and Spanish in Spain and Seville and speaks Catalan as well as Spanish.
Buchan later attended Harvard University for postgraduate work.
Spain has been without an ambassador since before the inauguration of President Trump.
Buchan’s nomination will have to be formally approved by the United States Senate.
