Eugenio Derbez: “If We Reach $6 Million It Will Be a Success”
Part 2 of Eugenio Derbez: “If We Reach $6 Million It Will Be a Success”
Actor Director Diego Luna agrees. The Mexican star of Y Tu Mama Tambien released his second film as director, “Cesar Chavez” about a union leader who won rights for migrant laborers, in the United States last month. “The Latino community is growing, changing and defining itself, we have to send the message that we want to be represented in the film. It has always fallen into a cliché. There are so many beautiful stories in our community that have never been told”, he said before the release of his film, which was also distributed by Pantalion and ended up grossing about 5 million Euros.
“Hollywood thinks that Latinos don’t want to see themselves on-screen, that they prefer watching The Transformers or features that have nothing to do with the lives of Latino people.” They actually think that because the film is coming out o Spain or Mexico, that it won’t work.
Eugenio Derbez has made them realize that it is simply wrong to think this way. The problem is that these films cannot compete againstthose big productionswith much bigger marketing resources.
Pantelion spent less than $5 million the campaign for “Instructions Not Included” which woudl have served for ab solutely nothing i it were not or the efforts of Eugenio Derbez. “This is his film, says Paul Pressburger, the company’s CEO “He has a very loyal audience and dedicated a huge amount of time to the launch.”
Eugenio Derbez confirms this statement. “I did the bigget promotional campaign of my career, the biggest that has been done for any Spanish-language film, at least. I have spent 20 years working or this community, they watch my programs on Univision and I know the audience very well.I know what they like. But I don’t have the secret. I hope I have the knack to be able to keep on giving them what they want to see, and to bring in other audiences. I want to expand my career in the US and allow the producers to expand their box office takings.
