Massive Earthquake Hit off Coast of Northern Chile
A massive earthquake with an 8.2 magnitude, hit off the coast of Northern Chile Tuesday night, April 1st. The government evacuated most of the country’s long and winding coastline.
The massive earthquake in Chile caused the first waves of a tsunami
which hit many of the cities on the coastline which is 2,653 miles
long.
Chile lies in one of the world’s most earthquake prone zones.
There was an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Central Chile in 2010 which left 525 people dead. Tuesday night’s
massive earthquake with its epicenter 53 miles southwest of Cuya
near the border of Peru has reported the death of five people.
The Interior Minister that the deaths occurred in the city of Iquique, and were the result of heart attacks and crushing.
The national emergency service ordered immediate evacuation of all
coastal areas including Easter Island and the archipelago of Juan Fernandez.
No looting has been reported, but electricity failures occurred
across most of Arica, which is a port city of about 200,000 people.
Since the massive earthquake which hit in 2010, the Chilean authorities have been working on improving the evacuation procedures.
The news media also reports that the evacuation procedures which took place Tuesday evening, were made in a relatively calm and orderly manner.
The Chilean government has staged several tsunami emergency drills along the coast so that people can be more prepared and be more aware of what they must do.
